Task 2: Visual Analysis

Recap:
In this task, I will look closely at the artwork or design you picked in Task 1. I will study its design elements, size, where it's placed, its purpose, and how well it connects with the UNSDG goal I chose.

Phase 1 - Observation:
The artwork features a red background with bullet holes, one for each victim of the Monterey Park shooting during Lunar New Year celebrations. The bullet holes are depicted in a realistic manner, appearing as if they have pierced through the surface of the red background. The sizes of the bullet holes varies from big to small and grouped together to alone. The vibrant red background and the stark bullet holes immediately draws the viewer's attention and contrast each other. The whole artwork is set inside the newspaper's front section.

Phase 2 - Analysis:
The contrast between the red background and the bullet holes creates visual impact, emphasizing the violence depicted in the artwork. It is a play on colors as the primary color for lunar new year is also red. The placement of each bullet hole depicts the lives of victims that were wrongly taken. This emphasis on the bullet holes serves to underscore the importance of addressing gun violence and promoting peace, aligning with UNSDG Goal 16. The symbolism of the bullet holes conveys a powerful message about the need for justice and remembrance of the lives lost in this tragedy. Words are also used in the header section so it is clear this artwork is being expressed as an important headline.

Phase 3 - Interpretation:
This artwork by Shoshibuya serves as a poignant reminder of the tragic Monterey Park shooting during Lunar New Year celebrations. It was created January 24, 2023 and was noted as the 33rd mass shooting of 2023 (Nierenberg, 2023). The artwork uses mix media techniques to create a new dimension for the viewers to feel. Mixed media in art emerged in 1912and overtime led to its widespread adoption. Essentially, art can encompass any material or combination thereof (Tate, n.d.). This piece of artwork holds deeper meanings as to the initial observation. The artwork serves as a call to action, urging society to work towards preventing future tragedies and fostering a safer world for all.
