Fig 1.7 Creating the cloud

Firstly, I created the shapes using the pen tool to create the shape of the mushroom cloud which I will then use as my subject.

Fig 1.8 Adding Color and Effect

I then tested out few designs of the cloud and landed on this. I added the colors of the Palestine flag and added shadows and glows.

Fig 1.9 Sketching Doves

Next, I wanted to incorporate doves as a symbol of freedom so I hand drew them. After that, I used the pen tool to shape out the doves.

Fig 1.10 Clip Mask

As I was working on the task, I decided to switch it up and use clip masks for the birds to shape the cloud. I found this to look better and creates more harmony and repetition within the design.

Fig 1.11 Shortlisting ideas

After that, I created a few variations and added the text 'From the river to the sea'. I played around with the placements and decided on my final design.

Rationale:

The rationale behind my design stems from a desire to convey a powerful message about the ongoing conflict in Palestine, aligning with UNSDG 16's objective of promoting peace and justice. The mushroom cloud explosion serves as a stark representation of the devastating impact of war, while the incorporation of doves symbolizes the universal yearning for peace and freedom amidst conflict. By utilizing the colors of the Palestine flag, I aim to draw attention to the current situation and express solidarity with those affected by the violence.

The inclusion of the text "from the river to the sea" serves as an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and reconciliation in resolving conflicts. Additionally, the grunge texture added to the design mirrors the grim realities of war and destruction, underscoring the urgency of addressing the underlying causes of conflict.

Design principles such as contrast are evident in the juxtaposition of the peaceful symbolism of doves against the destructive imagery of the mushroom cloud. Emphasis is placed on the text "from the river to the sea," drawing attention to the message of hope and aspiration for peace. The use of color and texture further enhances the visual impact of the design, evoking emotions and highlighting the urgency of addressing the conflict in Palestine. Overall, the design serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of working towards a peaceful resolution.
