Project 3 / Digital Triptych
LECTURES
INSTRUCTIONS
To initiate the project, our first step will be to select a story from the
website https://poestories.com/stories.php. Once a story has been chosen, we
will deconstruct its narrative into a 3-act structure, encompassing an
Introduction, Climax, and Epilogue. Finally, we will produce a digital
triptych comprising three panels, with each panel visually representing one of
the acts. For this particular undertaking, "William Wilson" by Edgar Allan Poe
has been selected as the featured story.
Setup: The narrator introduces himself as William Wilson and
shares his life story. He reveals the presence of his doppelgänger, a
dark mirror image who constantly shadows him. The rivalry between the
narrator and his doppelgänger begins in their early
childhood.
Conflict: The narrator is in constant competition with his
doppelgänger, who always outperforms him. The doppelgänger becomes
increasingly menacing and exposes the narrator's immoral actions. The
narrator tries to distance himself from his double but is relentlessly
pursued.
Resolution: The climax occurs at a masquerade ball, where the
narrator confronts his doppelgänger. In a fit of rage, the narrator
stabs his double but realizes he has fatally wounded himself. As he
dies, the narrator experiences remorse and horror, understanding the
true nature of his doppelgänger.
Research
I made some research on posters and art that relates to the story I
chose. I was going for a schizophrenic or bipolar disorder theme.
Sketches
This was a brief idea and my direction. I wanted to show distinct
changes between the first and third art board. and express the
conflict and cause in the middle.
Digitalization
After completing the sketches, I imported them into Adobe Illustrator
and utilized the Image Trace feature to convert them into a three-color
scheme.
I used this as my subject. 2 faces of the same person shows a lot of
contrast and effect and it suits my story well.
This is after adding elements into my first draft. I liked the direction but I
was unsure as it felt like it was straying away from the storyline. I
immediately consulted Ms Anis. Following feedback, I made revisions to
the second artboard, refining the artwork to align more effectively with the
story and evoke a stronger sense of relatability. I also changed elements and
included sketches that help strengthen the theme of the story. Through these
changes, the artwork now better portrays the conflict depicted in the story.
This is my final triptych
After completing my triptych, I used my skills to create an animated comic panel. This final project I found difficult as I had to look for more materials and inspiration and learn guides from Youtube. The task was to create a one page animated visual novel based on any act.
I chose the second artboard to to create my panel. I showed the order of him feeling someone is always following and copying him. Then I express how he kills his doppelganger in a fit of rage and realized what he had done after.
This was the order for the animation I used methods I learned from both my DPI and Typography modules.
This is my final visual novel page.
This is my final animated visual novel.
Feedback:
Week 12: Act 2, character confronting alter ego is not clear. can you refine this
to highlight the clash of his inner selves.
Reflection
Experience: This was a fun and tedious task. It required a lot of
creativity and finding ideas to express my story correctly. Overall I
enjoyed it, I learned many new things and how to view and analyze stories
and art to create a better understanding for the normal eye.
Observations: It was fun to see and analyze my storyline and how it
progressed. The different changes affected the artboard overall greatly. I
could also see what my peers were creating and take some inspiration from
them as well as their work ethic or what goes on behind the
scenes.
Findings: I found this task quite challenging as I had multiple creative blocks that
halted my progress. Since I am not good or have much experience in sketches,
I had to practice a ton and trace images from the web to use as vectors. I
also imported vector files I found online that I believed could be used for
my benefit. I then changed it up with the toolbar.
